SASI Hosts Photography Workshop at Sikh Heritage Museum

On 26 August 2025, the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) hosted a successful workshop titled “Photography is Forever: Documenting History in the Present” at the Sikh Heritage Museum, in collaboration with photographer and content creator Gibi Saini.

The workshop began with a contextual introduction by Thamilini Jothilingam, Digital Archivist at the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive (SACDA). Her talk highlighted the importance of historical preservation through photography, particularly in relation to the museum’s current exhibit, “Chandra Bodalia’s Legacy: The History and Heritage of Gurdwaras in BC.”

Following this, Gibi Saini led an engaging and informative session focused on mobile photography. Participants learned practical tips on capturing compelling images, adjusting phone camera settings for optimal results, and accessing further resources to continue developing their photography skills. Attendees were then invited to apply their new knowledge by exploring the National Historic Site, practicing their photography in real time.

The workshop also featured a hands-on component where Gibi shared various pieces of camera equipment, allowing participants to explore different tools and techniques up close.

SASI extends its sincere thanks to Gibi Saini for his collaboration and expertise. This event offered a unique opportunity to engage with themes of heritage and storytelling through the lens of contemporary photography.
