Before this class, first, getting First aid was very scary for me? I have one first aid book in my home and sometimes I opened the book and asked my husband “can you explain this word for me,” […] but after this class, I understand everything practically and it’s very useful for me. – Pilot participant
After almost two years of intense development work and piloting, the English for Emergency First Aid (EEFA) Materials Package is now freely available tutela, Canada’s online community for English and French language professionals. The package is the result of tight collaboration between Victoria Surtees, the TLC’s Internationalization Specialist, Karla Hiltermann and Paula Mannington of Archway Community Services, and Mike Mutter and Carolyn MacLaren of UFV Continuing Education. It was funded by a BCTEAL Charitable Foundation Award. The materials are designed to support newcomers with intermediate levels of English who are seeking to complete an Emergency First Aid certificate. Drawing on trauma-informed principles, the curriculum builds in mindfulness, outdoor activities, reflective exercises, and community-building. With 8 lessons, an instructor guide, and 36 hours of activities, the package gives participants the language and cultural context they need to complete the 1-day course successfully and with confidence.
