ChatGPT and AI – What’s happening at TLC?

Teaching and Learning Centre has hosted three open forums on the topic of AI and ChatGPT technology. The first forum, The Impact of AI-Chat GPT in Higher Ed brought together over 60 participants from various disciplines to discuss the impact, the challenges and the possibilities here at UFV.

The second forum,  Tech Talk – AI Generated Images in Higher Ed, took place on Feb 22 with guest Robin Pittman from SoCA, explored AI image generators such as DALL-E-2, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion that create art from any natural language prompt.

The third forum, Leveraging the Technology to Assist Academics, took place on March 29th with guest Russell Campbell from the School of Computing. Russell shared how using Team-based learning (TBL) has helped address the issue of cheating and improve students’ use of this new technology as an additional learning tool.

The fourth session, Ethical Considerations: ChatGPT and other Artificial Intelligence Generators, will take place April 26th. We will discuss ways to employ these technologies ethically for teaching, learning, and assessment.

Some key takeaways from the sessions were:

  • Re-thinking assessment design – using interviews, video, and audio to assess
  • Keeping up to speed with the changes in Technology
  • Incorporating “lived experiences” of students into learning activities.
  • Use in-class collaborative learning strategies (PBL, POGIL, etc.)
  • Adapting assignments to ask students to analyze ‘correct’ generative texts.
  • Focus on process rather than product.
  • Create tasks that build capacities!

Participants also had the opportunity to discuss their own experiences with ChatGPT and share ideas, strategies, resources, and areas where they may need more support on a Padlet. The Padlet continues to grow with each discussion. You can read and contribute to the Padlet discussion here. Or you can review this Resource Guide full of resources and strategies curated by Claire Hay, TLC Specialist.

To learn more about this rapidly evolving technology and its possibilities in UFV Classrooms, you can join the Tech Talk discussion on April 26th or attend one of the Chat Learning Tech discussion held every month.
