Sustainable UFV News! What we’ve been up to – October 2019

The Waste Audit 2.0.1.9

WHEN: Wednesday, October 16th
WHERE:
Abbotsford Campus: on the green
TIME:
9 am to 1 pm, depending on how many volunteers we have (you can pop by whenever!)

The date is set. This year’s audit is on Wednesday, October 16th. Look for our posters around campus and on social media (Instagram and Facebook).

We’ll keep you caffeinated and cared for. There will be coffee, there will be donuts,  there will be gloves, there will be fun times for all! This is an excellent opportunity to get some volunteer experience and to get involved with sustainability. Make a difference on campus!

The results of the audit will be posted, so all of us will be able to see how well UFV is doing in sorting waste into our 4-bin system and in diverting waste from the landfill.

Two New Student Sustainability Coordinators!

SustainableUFV is kicking off the new year with two new Student Sustainability Coordinators: Taylor and Kaitlin.

Taylor Breckles is completing her degree with a double major in Honours English and History. She has been helping out SustainableUFV for about a year and was instrumental in implementing the Bag-Be-Gone initiative. In those rare moments when she’s not working, she’s usually buried in a book and/or drinking coffee. She strives to reduce her environmental impact and is looking forward to hearing about what others do in their daily lives. She is always looking to learn from other people!

Kaitlin James is a 3rd year student at UFV working towards a science degree majoring in Geography and the Environment, with a minor in Biology, as well as a certificate in GIS. When she is not busy with studying or work, you will find her out exploring nature in any way she can, be it camping, mountain biking, or hiking. She is interested in living a low impact lifestyle and enjoys connecting with other who feel the same!

Taylor and Kaitlin are both excited to see what this year will bring!

A New Report – See What We’ve Been Up To!

The 2018/2019 UFV Report on Environmental Sustainability has been completed. In it, read about the work going on in Campus Planning and Facilities Management, the Student Sustainability Coordinators, our waste management practices and results, how we’re tackling climate change, new infrastructure, and get some stats regarding reduced emissions.

Plus, there’s a whole section entitled “Goats,” and if that doesn’t pique your interest I don’t know what will (yes, there is a picture of the goats!).

The will soon be available online at www.ufv.ca/sustainability.

The weather is starting to get a bit frosty, so please be conscious of your energy usage. Remember to layer up before coming to work or class and come prepared with a hot beverage (in a reusable mug, of course).

For employees, if you are feeling chilly in your workspace (sorry, old buildings) contact the Energy Manager, Blair McFarlane, for a free fleece blanket.

Feel free to reach out to us with any comments or suggestions – about anything, we’re not picky! Sustainability@ufv.ca is our email, but you can also reach us on Instagram and/or Facebook. Check us out!
