Congratulations to Biology Professor, Dr. Alan Reid for receiving Vancouver Granville’s 2019 “Unsung Hero” Award for going above and beyond to serve our community. The award was presented to him by the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Granville in Ottawa, Ontario in June 2019.

Alan was nominated by the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association for his continued commitment.

Alan Reid has volunteered his time, expertise as a Botanist, and passion since 2002.

He started volunteering with the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association completing vegetation surveys for the horticultural expert and that same year became our VanDusen Garden Guide Training Facilitator.

For the past 17 years, Alan, a University of the Fraser Valley Botany Professor volunteers 7-8 Saturdays each spring to train our Guide apprentices. For the last 5 years, he also co-facilitates our 8 day annual Bloedel Conservatory Docent training. As you can imagine there are also many hours spent developing and updating curriculum. Alan has provided botanical and interpretation training and inspiration to hundreds of volunteers, enabling them to in turn educate and inspire hundreds and thousands of visitors to the Gardens.
