Internship Position Title: Student Sustainability Coordinator

Department: Facilities

Position Term: Semester specific, renewable to a maximum of two years

Title of Immediate Supervisor: Energy Manager

Hours of Work: Flexible, to a maximum of 12 hours per week

Starting Wage: $15/hour + 11% in lieu of vacation and benefits

PURPOSE

The Student Sustainability Coordinator (SSC) facilitates and supports the sustainability initiatives in Facilities Management (FM) at UFV and provides support for sustainability projects throughout the institution. The SSC also liaises with students and student groups, Sustainable UFV, and the Sustainability Advisory Committee providing support where appropriate for student based sustainability endeavors.

NATURE OF WORK

The SSC will develop a selective work plan early in the term of engagement which draws on some of the following elements: The listing below is not to be considered exclusive.

FACILITATE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
Serves as a resource, mentor and support for student engagement in sustainability matters

  • Organizes and facilitates student-oriented sustainability visioning events
  • Mentors, advises, and engages student organizations with institutional direction regarding sustainability
  • Assists, as appropriate, with student sustainability projects

EDUCATIONAL ENGAGEMENT IN SUSTAINABILITY
Facilitates the development of sustainability-oriented learning opportunities

  • Identifies opportunities where addressing sustainability endeavors could offer educational value
  • Liaises with faculty to create partnerships with UFV classes
  • Hosts and delivers educational workshops on sustainability
  • Utilizes results from a campus-wide waste audit to encourage behavioural changes related to waste reduction

PROJECT COORDINATION AND PROGRAM DELIVERY
Researches, coordinates and promotes UFV sustainability projects and programs in the areas of alternative transportation systems, water management, waste management, food systems, carbon neutrality, energy management, community development and land use

  • Researches past projects and approaches to sustainability issues
  • Coordinates and connects with stakeholder groups both on and off campus
  • Helps to develop timelines and task lists pertaining to the projects
  • Assists with the recruitment and coordination of volunteers
  • Develops promotional approaches and marketing campaigns

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS
In consultation with the appropriate stakeholders, develops marketing campaigns and carries out public relations as it pertains to UFV’s involvement in sustainability

  • Promotes FM services and sustainability efforts undertaken by the department
  • Promotional institutional engagement in sustainability using a variety of public relations methods (ex. Presentations, interviews, newsletters, etc.)
  • Updates the sustainability web-pages
  • Develops marketing campaigns and strategies to meet the needs of sustainability projects and programs
  • Designs, creates and/or outsources graphic work for promotional materials and sustainability campaigns
  • Promotes events, activities and programs via appropriate forms of media including UFV Today, myUFV, and various social media outlets
  • Represents UFV at sustainability related community projects and events

PROTOCOL AND PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT

  • Consults with facility users to developing protocols and procedures which foster sustainability
  • Researches and identifies best practices pertaining to sustainability
  • Advises and supports departments in adopting alternative practices to increase and enhance institutional sustainability

GENERAL

  • Responds to various inquiries by faculty, staff, students and administrators regarding sustainability
  • Develops various applications, writes proposals and reports

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • An upper level student seeking to complete a bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to campus sustainability
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership instincts and socialization skills
  • Ability to approach – and be approached by – others to discuss potentially polarizing topics
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of workplace demands and challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and set priorities
  • A self-starter that is able to work both independently and on a team
  • Familiarity with UFV as an organization and UFV programs
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of conditions, and safely lift a minimum of 10kg
