On February 20th, SASI hosted a successful Student Training Day for current Research Assistants and student research volunteers. The aim was to focus on professional development, providing students with valuable insights into workplace standards, ethics, and practices that can be applied throughout their careers.
The day began with light refreshments and tea, offering attendees an opportunity to settle in and connect with one another. After brief introductions from the SASI team and participants, the training session commenced.
The first half of the session featured a roundtable discussion, where students shared the strengths and traits they bring to the workplace. Key themes that emerged included care and integrity, attention to detail, a focus on both individual and collaborative work, and problem-solving skills. These exercises helped participants reflect on their professional attributes and how they contribute to a successful work environment and approaches to addressing what the real challenges are.
Following the discussion, attendees participated in a team-building exercise. Using common household kitchen items, small groups of two were tasked with building a structure. The challenge was to create the tallest and most creative design. Halfway through the activity, participants were asked to combine their structures with another pair, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, effective communication, and teamwork in achieving shared goals.
Overall, the event was an engaging and enriching experience for all involved. Students left with valuable knowledge on professional conduct and a deeper appreciation for the importance of teamwork and effective individual and team communication in the workplace.
