SACDA releases inaugural newsletter – The Hive

January 27, 2025, marked the official launch of the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive’s (SACDA) newsletter – The Hive.

SACDA is honored to be able to launch The Hive in the month of January – a month which celebrates Tamil Heritage Month, Lohri, Pongal and Makar Sankranti, which are occasions of community, renewal, harvest and togetherness.

The Hive’s evocative logo visually encapsulates the SACDA’s mission—fostering collaboration, preserving collective knowledge, and strengthening community bonds through archival storytelling.

The icon at the heart of The Hive logo symbolizes connection, knowledge-sharing, and community building. Rooted in a hexagonal honeycomb shape, it represents the essence of a hive—a space where collective effort, resilience, and collaboration thrive. This structure reflects the purpose of an archive, where individual contributions come together to form a rich, shared history.

Within the hexagon, the interwoven curved lines create a dynamic and open form, carrying multiple layers of meaning. These lines resemble the pages of an open book, symbolizing learning, storytelling, and the accessibility of knowledge. When mirrored and combined, they subtly take the shape of a bee, reinforcing the hive metaphor while representing energy, movement, and collective synergy. The way the lines converge further signifies connection and convergence, reflecting the idea of people, histories, and ideas coming together in a shared space.

In each issue, The Hive will bring stories from our archive, updates on collaborations, and insights into how we are preserving the rich and diverse histories of South Asian Canadian communities. The SACDA team conveyed that this archive belongs to all of us, and we can all contribute to it in many ways.

“Please join us in the journey to document the histories of South Asian Canadian communities and contribute to historiographies that we can call our own and in which we can see ourselves.” – The SACDA Team
