University of Calgary Conference on Postsecondary Learning and Teaching – Call for Proposals

University of Calgary Conference on Postsecondary Learning and Teaching

May 12-13, 2015

The University of Calgary invites you to submit proposals and register for their Conference on Postsecondary Learning and Teaching.

The Conference on Postsecondary Learning and Teaching offers an opportunity for faculty, students, academic librarians and staff at the University of Calgary and the wider academic community to share, critically examine and build on our collective knowledge of teaching and learning.

Conference theme:
Design for Learning: Fostering Deep Learning, Engagement and Critical Thinking

The design of our learning environments – curricula, experiences, assessments and learning spaces – focuses on fostering deep learning, engagement and critical thinking. There is a growing body of evidence that intentional and thoughtful design, whether it be at the institutional, program or individual level can enhance student engagement and learning experiences (Biggs, 2014; Brooks & Solheim, 2014; Fink, 2013; Reid, 2012; Smith & Campbell, 2012). At the 2015 University of Calgary Postsecondary Conference on Learning and Teaching, we will have the opportunity to explore how learning environments and spaces can be intentionally designed to foster deep learning, engagement and critical thinking.

All members of the academic community are invited to share their experiences, practices and research that have enhanced deep learning, engagement and critical thinking. Some of the questions you might address include:

·     How do you foster deep learning, student engagement and critical thinking through the design of your:

o    Course outcomes, assessments and learning activities?

o    Teaching approaches?

o    Program or course?

o    Learning spaces?

·         What are your experiences of face-to-face, virtual, or blended learning environments that enable and enhance teaching and learning?:

·         How have you incorporated any areas of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) results to improve student engagement?

·         What are some of the influences that shape the design of your program or course to enable student learning?

·         What would the ideal teaching and learning environment and/or experience look like?

·         What do you foresee in the future design of learning experiences and/or spaces in postsecondary education?

Deadline for proposal submissions: Monday, March 9, 2015
