Mock Exam Sessions: Practice, Prep, and a Little Fun Along the Way

by Navneet Sidhu

Exams can feel like a huge mountain to climb, especially for first-year students who are still adjusting to university life. The deadlines are new, the workload is heavier, and the pressure can feel real. That’s where SLG (Supported Learning Groups) mock exam sessions come in.

These three-hour sessions are designed to give students a low-stakes practice run before the real thing. Think of it as a rehearsal: you get to test your knowledge, sharpen your time management skills, and try out strategies for handling big chunks of material… without the stress of grades attached.

What Makes Mock Exams Different?

SLG leaders go through special training to make these sessions more than just “write an exam and leave.” They’re built to:

  • Simulate the actual exam experience
  • Teach practical study strategies you can reuse in any course
  • Boost confidence and reduce last-minute panic

One SLG leader shared that a lot of students tend to put off studying until it’s too late—which often means panic sets in right before exam day. Her solution? She schedules her mock exam prep sessions at least a week before the real exam. This gives students time to revisit tough concepts, reinforce what they know, and head into the exam hall with confidence.

She also emphasizes the importance of studying in smaller, manageable chunks rather than cramming the night before—an approach proven to improve retention and reduce stress.

Acronyms That Stick

During leader training, SLG leaders even came up with creative acronyms to help students remember their favourite study strategies. Our personal favourite? Team LOSERS (yes, they named it that on purpose). Here’s what it stands for:

  • Linking the concepts
  • Organizing the study material
  • Summarizing
  • Extrapolating (thinking outside the box)
  • Reinforcing the material
  • Sharing ideas with friends

It’s a playful reminder that sometimes, being a “LOSER” is actually the best way to win at exams!

Why It Matters

By combining realistic practice with smart study strategies, SLG mock exam sessions help students feel:

  • More prepared
  • More confident
  • More in control of their learning journey

Exams will always come with a bit of stress, but with the right preparation, that stress can be turned into focus and momentum.
