On Wednesday, January 25th, the Teaching and Learning Centre hosted an Open Forum on the topic of AI and ChatGPT technology. The forum brought together over 60 participants from various disciplines to discuss the impact of ChatGPT on Higher Education and specifically the challenges and possibilities here at UFV.
The forum began with an overview of ChatGPT, an advanced AI-powered text generation model, and its capabilities. The facilitators touched on the challenges and concerns of participants but spent the majority of the forum discussing the possibilities and potential benefits of using ChatGPT in the UFV classroom.
Some key takeaways were:
-
- Re-thinking assessment design
- Incorporating “lived experiences” of students into learning activities
- Use in-class collaborative learning strategies (PBL, POGIL, etc.)
- Adapt assignments that ask students to analyze even ‘correct’ solutions
- Focus on process rather than product
- Create tasks that build capacities!
Participants also had the opportunity to discuss their own experiences with ChatGPT and share ideas, strategies and areas where they may need more support. The in-person attendees were able to connect with each other in the ThinkerSpace (G124) and the online attendees were able to join in the discussion via Zoom’s chat feature, breakout rooms, and Padlet. You can read and contribute to the Padlet discussion here.
The Teaching and Learning Centre organized the event to provide a platform for the UFV community to learn and share knowledge about the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence technology.
The forum was well-received by participants, with many praising the opportunity to learn more about ChatGPT and its possibilities in their discipline.
