LIYSF 2023: Day 12

Hello everyone! It’s Catherine here to recap LIYSF day 12! It is so crazy that LIYSF is already almost over! Today was a bit of a slower day. We started off with having breakfast and going to our first specialist lectures of the day. Unfortunately, we didn’t get photos of our lectures today.

My lecture was with Dr. Martin Foster. Dr. Foster is a professor of Energy Storage and Conversion in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He covered the history of electricity, methods of harnessing electricity, and the future of renewable energy. He talked about the future goals of net zero and the roles energy storage will have working towards this goal.

Manjot’s lecture was on Emerging Infections with Dr. Padmasayee Papineni. Dr. Papineni is a consultant in Infection Diseases and Acute Medicine at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, UK. They covered major infectious diseases, the interactions they have, and how they lead to epidemics or pandemics.

After our specialist lectures Manjot and I had some free time. Some of the students were going on the optional visits that day, so Manjot and I decided to go out and explore a bit more. We stopped for coffee and then donuts on our explorations before heading back home for dinner. It was our first time trying Spanish coffee and we both loved it!

The donut shop was so cute too!

We even got to go into a Doc Marten store too!

On our walk, Manjot and I came across this poster that was so amazing! We are both so proud to be women in STEM and rolemodels for young women!

We met up with another student from Italy and had dinner while discussing different customs and traditions in our culture. Both Manjot and I will be visiting Italy after LIYSF so we had plenty of questions!

Finally we went back to our room to do our final bit of cleaning and getting ready to start packing as tomorrow is an action filled day!

Stay tuned for day 13 which is our final day! Manjot and I will be co-authoring this fun final day!
