Our AGRI 321 students recently harvested potatoes and had the opportunity to observe different plant organs and learned how potatoes develop tubers on underground stems.
To prepare for harvest, they learned about top-kill practices. Top-kill has to be done two weeks before harvest to help the potatoes set the skins to ensure storage quality and good handling practices.
Students used mechanical top-kill method and chemical top-kill, while continuing to check on potato skins and harvesting different potato varieties.
