This morning all 500 LIYSF participants representing 77 countries gathered in the Royal Geographic Society Ondaatje Theatre for the LIYSF opening ceremony. The president’s address was given by Professor Clare Elwell: a past LIYSF participant and current medical physicist. She spoke to her experiences here as a student, and the forum’s value not only as a space to develop scientifically, but also socially and culturally.
The introductions were followed by an insightful key note address by Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, focusing on the role of ribosomes in protein synthesis, as well as a later lecture on living with artificial intelligence by Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt. All of the speakers stressed how integral science is across all disciplines, further emphasizing this year’s LIYSF theme – Science at the Interface.
