Sylvia Grace Borda
She is an artist working within and around the media of photography and film, exploring and merging their social, technical, and conceptual possibilities. Borda is a pioneer known for creating unconventional or multi-dimensional portraits of her subjects within the Google Streetview engine. She is currently embarking on a two year project, FARM TABLEAUX FINLAND, to create a series of contemporary portraits about Finnish farmers and their farming practices by using a combination of both the latest digital technologies, Google Streetview, together with past 19th century imaging processes, the tableaux vivant. Sylvia’s European project is extending and building on her art production entitled ‘This one’s for the farmer’ that examined farming in the Fraser Valley last year. This past endeavour was exhibited at both the Surrey Art Gallery and the Surrey Urban Screen as part of their Autumn 2013 programming.
Typically farming is not the subject matter of contemporary art: it often remains as a hidden and abstract activity forgotten by the general public. In FARM TABLEAUX, Borda’s subjects are Finnish farmers who are being carefully captured in staged digital scenes or tableaux composed for Google Streetview.
