A vital part of the oil sands extraction process is reclamation of the affected waters. These reclamation projects require rapid and reliable toxicity assessment, but conventional toxicity tests using whole animals are relatively slow, costly, and often subjective, and also require the sacrifice of test organisms. A non-lethal alternative, using fish cell lines, has been developed for potential use in supporting oil sands reclamation planning. An interesting overview of the oil sands, environmental monitoring, and remediation strategies, presented from a cell biologist’s point of view.
