President Joanne MacLean on medical leave

In December 2022, President Joanne MacLean experienced a cardiac health issue resulting in hospitalization in the intensive care unit of the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Her doctors advised her to commence medical leave and, while she has been resting at home, she has not yet been able to return to her duties as President and Vice-Chancellor.

In accordance with board policy (BRP 225.05), Dr. James Mandigo, Provost and Vice-President Academic, stepped into the Acting President and Vice-Chancellor role while a clearer understanding of the expected recovery time for Dr. MacLean was determined.

Over the last few weeks, Dr. MacLean’s medical advisors have formulated a plan for her treatment and recovery. While she is in good spirits and is feeling better, she has been under direction to continue reducing activity.

Doctors are consulting with Dr. MacLean regarding the timing of her return to work. While this exact timeline is still being determined, we know her leave will be a minimum of several months.

Upon recommendation of the UFV Board Executive Committee, the UFV Board of Governors has resolved to continue the appointment of Dr. Mandigo as Acting President and Vice-Chancellor over this period. The Acting President’s office will provide further details regarding subsequent changes to Senior Administrative appointments as a result of this decision.

On behalf of the UFV Board, we wish Dr. MacLean a complete recovery and we support her unconditionally during this challenging time.

Sincerely,

John Pankratz
Chair, UFV Board of Governors
