Rights of Indigenous Children in Care — National Indigenous Rights Education Day — Mar 17

NIRED-CarrielynnEvery year around the birthday of the late George Manuel, UFV hosts an annual event to bring awareness to the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This year we are focusing on the rights of Indigenous children in care with Guest Speaker Grand Chief Stewart Phillip. This is timely given the Truth and Reconciliation Commission call to action #1 (calling upon all levels of government to reduce the number of Aboriginal children in care) and the recent Canadian Human Rights Tribunal decision on the funding inequities and discriminatory practices against Indigenous children. There are currently three times as many Indigenous children in the care of the government, than there were at the height of residential school. This forum will highlight the issues and then call upon everyone to commit to some action, no matter how small or how big to help improve the current situation facing our most vulnerable families and children. Hope you can join us.

Thurs, March 17
6-8 pm
