The UFV Spanish program invites everyone to visit our Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar in the Crit Space (C1401) on the Abbotsford campus, open October 23 to November 5 during gallery hours.
Set up by SPAN 201 students, the altar honours a living Mexican tradition that blends Mesoamerican Indigenous beliefs about death and memory with Catholic practices. Bilingual panels explain the celebration’s history, the altar’s parts, and the meaning of each offering, from marigolds and candles to pan de muerto and papel picado.
The space is also interactive: visitors can add a small item to the ofrenda or share a memory of a loved one on our memory wall. Students, staff, faculty, classes, and community members are all welcome.
Organized by the Spanish program, Modern Languages Institute (MOLA).
