Severe weather: small amounts of wet snow anticipated for the Fraser Valley

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement indicating possible wet snow overnight transitioning to rain by mid-day Monday.

Educational activities remain primarily remote except for a limited number of courses requiring face-to-face instruction to achieve learning objectives. These classes are anticipated to proceed as scheduled and are listed here.

UFV is monitoring the weather and all campuses are scheduled to be open under winter weather conditions. Please leave extra time for your commute to UFV if you have a face-to-face class and commute with care. Winter shoes and clothing recommended. Crews will clear parking lots, walkways, and entrances.

The Student Union Society Shuttle campus shuttle bus will be operating according to this schedule.

Libraries at both the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses will resume operations according to this schedule.

An update will be provided at 7 am at UFV.ca.

  1. Hi Dave,

There’s actually quite of bit of snow that fell last night and it’s dangerous driving in these conditions. Should I contact my professor directly? I’m not too sure what to do.

    • Yes. Please contact your professor through the method you usually would communicate with them (email, blackboard etc.).

    • Hi SS,
Yes, UFV monitors conditions across the Fraser Valley and evaluates factors including: roads, transit, weather, Police and RCMP advisories, School districts’ status etc.
Environment Canada indicates 2-10 cm wet snow transitioning to rain by mid-day today Mon, Dec 6. If you evaluate the conditions and feel you cannot commute please contact your faculty member in the usual method your class utilizes.

  2. Hi Dave,

Any updates or thoughts on cancellation. I’m in the BSN program and my group is afraid to travel out today for our clinical placement. We have classmates coming from Chilliwack and delta! It would not be easy for them to risk coming out just for schools to close at 7am.

    Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Arsh,
Please follow the protocol your faculty members have outlined in terms of your placements. Environment Canada indicates 2-10 cm wet snow transitioning to rain by mid-day today Mon, Dec 6. 3. Hello, is UFV monitoring conditions other than just Chilliwack & Abbotsford? Snow has accumulated in Langley and I am to commute to Chilliwack because my prof has permission to run the class. Conditions are dangerous. Our class starts early. I will need to leave in the next 30 min. Is UFV going to be the one making the call here or are we to simply contact our profs? This is our last class that should be done via zoom has we know it’s possible after the last two years.
    Concern student.

  4. Hello, I think having an update at 7 am is a bit to late as people start classes at 7am and 8 am with people leaving early in the morning from all over the Fraser Valley. Just wondering if we could get an update ASAP.

    • Hi bwhitehouse,
Thanks for your comment re: 7am. Typically we do update by 0600, however with nearly all UFV classes occurring remotely, we moved that time to 7am. We provided an update last night indicating we would be open and those limited in-person classes would be proceeding. This was done to let people know of our plans last night and to prepare for classes to continue. However, I am taking your comment under advisement, for sure.

  5. The highways are not safe right now. This is ridiculous, ufv stated “your safety is our number one priority”. Not everyone lives in chillwack and Abbotsford. There is a lot of snow in Surrey/Langley area..

  6. Highway might be clear but the roads are a different story. All ice and slush. Not safe.

Will classes still be on for the afternoon? Can you provide us with an update before 10:30? As classes start at 1
