Update: Nov. 15 12:05 pm – UFV cancelling face-to-face classes at all campuses

Due to severe flooding and deteriorating road conditions in the Fraser Valley, and the potential for power outages, face-to-face classes at ALL UFV campuses are cancelled beginning at 1 pm today, Monday Nov. 15.

Students should check with faculty through Blackboard (or the usual method of communication with faculty) as well as your UFV student email for further information regarding alternative classes.

Online and remote classes will continue as scheduled.

Faculty and Staff: UFV faculty and staff should check with their supervisors regarding leaving work and should also check Drive BC for safe routes home before leaving campus.

Events: All scheduled on-campus events are also cancelled starting at 1 pm today.

The UFV Campus Connector shuttle bus status will be updated on the SUS website and SUS twitter.

Buildings: UFV Libraries closed at 1pm. All other UFV buildings and facilities will remain open as long as conditions allow given the dynamic nature of the severe weather the area is experiencing.

If you elect to stay on campus, you can shelter in place at these locations:

Abbotsford Campus – the main UFV cafeteria in Building B, the Spirit Bear Café (formerly the Road Runner Café) in Building A.

Chilliwack Campus – Atrium of Building A at CEP or north entrance of the Trade and Technology Centre (TTC – Building T).

Emergency Shelter: Please note the City of Abbotsford’s Emergency Support Services has set-up a Reception Centre located at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC) 2499 McMillan Road for anyone displaced by flooding. If you are unable to return home or have been evacuated from your home you can go to the Abbotsford Recreation Centre for assistance and shelter.

Please check ufv.ca for more information and updates.

  1. Thank you! My brother also had a class today, later than mine, I would have been more worried for him than myself… and I wish everyone reading this comment safety and security!

  2. Hi Dave,

It’s great to know that the UFV campuses have shutdown for today. I have a class in Chilliwack tomorrow morning at 8am and there still is a rainfall warning in affect, will we know by tonight if UFV will be closed for tomorrow morning?

    • Hi Jordan.
As you can understand it’s super tough to predict this storm and the following weather. As soon as we can, we will update this evening. Check your UFV student email and UFV.ca and back here.

    • Hi Sarah,
As you can appreciate, predicting the weather is not easy – but as soon as we know the conditions and if we can safely open, we will update you. Stay tuned here, ufv.ca, social, and your student email. Lots of ways to get the news! Updates may come late this evening or early tomorrow morning depending on storm conditions, road access, power outages etc. Safety is the number one concern always and should be yours too. Take care.

    • We are going to be watching tonight and tomorrow for all kinds of different factors that will lead into our decision, Sarah. UFV.ca will be updated at 0600 tomorrow morning. Promise. 🙂

  3. Will we know by tonight what the plan is for tomorrow morning, as I have class in the early tomorrow and I drive out from Burnaby

    • Hello Harmen,
Very tough to know yet. Safety is our first concern and the weather is unpredictable. We will evaluate flooding, road conditions, power outages, and other factors. We will update at 6am tomorrow. Check UFV.ca then.

  4. Hi Dave, not sure if you saw but it was just announced that Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley will be closed from 7pm tonight. The highway closure is between Highway 11 and No. 3 Road due to a flood warning on the Sumass River. Highway 7 remains closed too due to flooding and debris.

Will there be another update sometime tonight or early tomorrow morning with regard to whether or not UFV is open?

    Thanks for the updates!

    • Karan,
Yes – we are watching road and environmental conditions closely this evening and overnight. UFV considers many factors before making a decision, but the top priority is always safety.
We will have a status update posted at 6am tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. Stay warm, safe, and dry tonight.

    • Hi Sherry, we are watching tonight and start at 0430 again tomorrow morning but will not have an update until 6am. We will do our best to post earlier but 6 is pretty much as soon as we can make it happen.

    • Hi Shakira – as indicated on the main page here, the UFV.ca home page and via social and student email, all UFV classes – face-to-face and online – are cancelled for today, Tuesday, Nov. 16.
