Bird Studies Canada is seeking one highly motivated, organized and experienced individual to coordinate volunteer participation in BSC’s British Columbia office, in particular the British Columbia Coastal Waterbird and Beached Bird Surveys, the Important Bird Area program, and the Vancouver Urban Birds project. The Programs Coordinator is also responsible, in coordination with other staff in BC and nationally, for assisting in fund–‐raising for regional programs in BC.

The position is based at the Pacific Wildlife Research Centre in Delta, where the BSC British Columbia Program is co–‐located with the Canadian Wildlife Service.

The position requires strong volunteer coordination, data management and communication skills (written and oral), experience in statistical analysis and graphic design, working with a GIS, and computer skills (MS Office–‐proficient, including Word, Excel, Access and Power Point).

Duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Coordinate and support a volunteer network, including regional coordinators and volunteers, to deliver on the programs’ research and monitoring objectives.
  2. Coordinate the programs’ monitoring and research activities.
  3. Recruit and further develop the programs’ participant base.
  4. Develop, evaluate and modify programs’ monitoring and research protocols.
  5. Regular communications via phone, email, yearly newsletter, social media, and other media with program volunteers, partners, and the public.
  6. Represent BSC in various forums including workshops and at scientific meetings.
  7. Prepare technical, summary and financial reports for funders, participants and project partners.
  8. Assist fund–‐raising efforts in coordination with other BSC staff, including writing funding applications, for the programs’ ongoing development.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.Sc., or B.Sc. in Wildlife Ecology, Conservation or a related field
  • Experience coordinating and managing volunteer programs and/or programs for bird conservation
  • Knowledge of BC’s naturalist and birding communities
  • Ability to work on several different projects concurrently
  • Well motivated, and highly organized
  • Experience leading outreach and/or stewardship projects or programs
  • Experience designing and running research and monitoring projects
  • Self–‐motivator and problem–‐solver
  • Public speaking experience
  • Database management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and partnership building skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid driver’s licence

ASSETS:

  • Experience working with a GIS
  • Previous experience fund–‐raising
  • Previous experience preparing summary and financial reports for funders and partners
  • French language capability

SALARY:

  • $42,000-$50,000, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits.
