Jet Lag, New Friends, and a Flag-Bearing Surprise: Day 1 at LIYSF Begins!

Kashvi our student representative is attending the London for the London International Youth Science Forum 2025. She kicks off her journey making global connections, a scenic stroll through South Kensington, and an early honour at the Opening Ceremony. Read her blog below:

After flying from Vancouver to Toronto, and then finally to London, I officially made it to the UK, though not without feeling the effects of jet lag. I barely slept on the flight, so it’s safe to say I landed feeling pretty exhausted!

The first day was mostly about check-ins, as students from all over the world arrived at different times. I was assigned to the Yellow Halls of Residence, located right in the heart of South Kensington (honestly, such a beautiful part of the city).

Since I arrived in the early morning and couldn’t access my room until the late afternoon, I went on a little street walkaround the area to grab something to eat.

In the evening, we had a lovely dinner, followed by the official briefing and a chance to meet the amazing LIYSF staff and students from over 92 countries, just as exciting as it sounds! After the briefing (which covered all the housekeeping and program guidelines), we went on a short orientation walk to the Royal Geographical Society and Imperial College London, where most of our lectures and events will take place.

And now, for a fun surprise: I’ve been selected to carry the flag in the LIYSF Opening Ceremony! Super exciting moment, but it does mean I’ll need to be up very early (around 6 AM 😅), so that’s it from me for now!
