UFV Science students shine at the 2026 Canadian Ecotoxicity Workshop “Bridging Science & Sustainability”

Current and former UFV science students Quinn Thomson, Ania Bula, and Caio de Figueroa attended the 52nd Annual Canadian Ecotoxicity Workshop (CEW), held October 4–7, 2026, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They were accompanied by their research supervisor, Dr. Lucy Lee, UFV Professor Emeritus and head of the Lee Lab.

CEW is Canada’s leading annual meeting in ecological toxicology and related disciplines. The workshop provides a forum for sharing research and discussing current and emerging issues of regional, national, and international importance concerning contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Participants include students, academics, government scientists and regulators, environmental consultants, and industry representatives.

Quinn Thomson graduated from UFV with a BSc Honours in Biology in June 2026. He presented his research topic entitled “Development of Cetacean Cellular Models for Ecotoxicity Testing in Endangered Whales”

Ania Bula is working towards her Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science. She presented her research topic, “Examining the Effects of Neonicotinoids on Innate Immune Responses in Fish Cell Cultures”

Caio Nicholson de Figueiroa is a 3rd-year student at UFV, working towards his BSc in Biochemistry. He took part in the poster presentation with his research topic “Beyond Ammonia: Cumulative Lysosomotriopic Effects of Weak Bases in Rainbow Trout Cell Lines”

The 2027 Canadian Ecotoxicity Workshop will be held in St. Andrews, New Brunswick!
