Hello everyone and welcome to Day 3 of the 66th LIYSF 2025!
It’s hard to believe we’re already three days in and I was especially excited for today because it was our first scientific visit! I woke up around 6, had breakfast and headed straight to the meeting point at Queen’s Lawn at Imperial College.
Everyone had picked a visit from a pretty cool list of options based on our interests. I chose the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, since I’m really interested in medicine and considering specialising in either radiology or anaesthesiology, so this one really stood out to me!
Once everyone had gathered, our group of 28 students took the Underground and made our way to the Association. We started off with a short but super informative lecture about the history of anaesthetics and how the field has evolved over the years.
After that, we got to do a hands-on activity, which was honestly the best part! We practiced intubation (basically helping a patient breathe under anaesthesia by inserting a tube into their airway) on a simulation dummy using real equipment. It was such an exciting experience and really cool to get a feel for something so closely related to what I want to do in the future! We also explored a small science museum in the same building, which had both historical and modern instruments used in anaesthesia.
Once we got back to Imperial, we had a hot lunch (much needed after all the walking!) and then headed over to the Royal Geographical Society for the Principal Lecture Demonstration. Today’s lecture was on Fusion Energy, and it was super insightful! After dinner, we ended the day with the Great Crossword Treasure Hunt, which was honestly such a fun way to wrap things up. It was kind of a mix between a scavenger hunt and a group puzzle. Our team of 15 was running around solving clues and piecing together the crossword. It definitely got chaotic at times, but the energy was amazing, and everyone was really into it. We finished around 9:30 pm, totally exhausted but excited to know the results!
All in all, it was a packed day, but I’m not complaining! I had so much fun and learned a lot! Can’t wait to see what Day 4 holds (after some much needed sleep and rest)!
