Two Bronze Medals Awarded at Canada-Wide Science Fair 2025

This spring, four exceptional students from the Langley and Chilliwack School Districts proudly represented our region at the 2025 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Their participation was made possible thanks to the generous support of the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) our dedicated  Educational and Community Partners who helped fund their travel and accommodations.

After earning top honours at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair, these talented young scientists earned their place on the national stage. There, they joined hundreds of students from across the country to present their innovative research to fellow youth scientists, educators, and STEM professionals.

Representing our local districts were:

  • Dennis Golubev – RE Mountain SecondarySticky Situation: Achieving Pesticide-Free Pollen with Enzymatic Synthesis
  • Nonit Gupta – RE Mountain SecondaryEarly Voices of Parkinson’s: Discovering Machine Learning Methods for Optimal Parkinson’s Detection
  • Gurleen Dhaliwal and Abigail Trites – Chilliwack Senior SecondaryThe Effects of Forest Fires on Plants and Soil

Each of the students brought forward compelling research rooted in real-world issues—from pollinator health and early disease detection to the long-term ecological effects of forest fires.

Notably, Dennis Golubev and Nonit Gupta were both awarded bronze medals for their outstanding projects, a remarkable achievement at one of Canada’s most competitive youth science fairs.

UFV and its partners were proud to support these students throughout their journey. By covering travel and accommodation expenses, the university helped remove financial barriers so the students could focus fully on sharing their work, learning from peers, and gaining experience that will fuel future academic and professional pursuits.

The success of these students is a testament to the talent, curiosity, and perseverance found in our local schools. Their accomplishments not only highlight the power of youth-led research but also underscore the importance of community and institutional support in nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Congratulations to Dennis, Nonit, Gurleen, and Abigail for representing our region with excellence and passion. We can’t wait to see where your ideas and curiosity take you next!
