LIYSF 2024 – Day 5

Hello everyone and welcome to LIYSF day 5! After the long day trips and early mornings of the last couple of days it was nice to have our first event at 9:30 this morning; Who doesn’t love to wake up and start the day with a particle physics lecture? Being the first time I could choose my lecturer I was excited to get my first taste of this field of physics.

Discussing the mathematics behind the standard model and demonstrating where it breaks down, Dr Luca Mantani walked us through exploring the world of particle physics by analysing data from the Large Hadron Collider. Being equal parts challenging as it was fascinating Dr. Mantani reminded me what it felt like to be back in the classroom at UFV.

In standard fashion, we grabbed our daily sandwich for lunch. We ventured to the Royal Geographical Society for our principal lecture of the day. Finding herself in the interdisciplinary field between mechanical engineering and chemistry Emma Hailwood discussed her work in researching the effects of eco fuels on the human body. Walking us through the measurement devices, types of eco fuels available within the UK, and how England E10 fuel(10% eco-friendly fuels, 90% petrol) might be the most dangerous for the human body.

Having some free time throughout the rest of our day, half of Australia and I decided to brave the London train system, travelling across town we partook in some sightseeing, book shopping, and stopped for dinner.

As we are in the middle of Kensington, food tends to be pricey here, especially compared to Chilliwack nevertheless, it’s a great atmosphere and the food is pretty good too.
