Dr Matt Sinclair was a LIYSF participant in 2004, and returned this morning to give a specialist lecture on machine learning in medical image analysis. Through the using of artificial intelligence in medical imaging, his company is improving outcomes of patients with coronary artery disease. I find his work particularly intriguing due to its ability to bridge the often distant fields of biology and physics, in order to advance medicine and healthcare as a whole.
Later in the day, we got to hear from the hugely successful engineer Dervilla Mitchell, who is currently the most senior female in her industry. A large part of her career has involved airport design, including the Heathrow airport where I flew in.
Next on the list was a visit to the Science Museum. It holds almost half a million objects, with a focus on western science, technology, and medicine. Getting to explore it was definitely a highlight of the trip.
