Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Faculty of Science AAAwards!
Each year, the Dean of Science in consultation with the department Heads of Science decide the recipients of these awards. They were handed out during the last Faculty Council meeting of the year.
Lin Long – Awesome Achievement Award, for overall excellence in academic endeavors
Lin’s dedication to the Faculty of Science, especially to Engineering Physics, is appreciated. Her work with the inaugural graduating cohort of Mechatronics deserves praise as does her overall work with our Physics students. They have acknowledged her support and input in many ways. Her work with local industries, especially in Agriculture and the Health sector is respected as well as her extended work in recruiting international students to UFV. She is a role model and mentor and we believe she has inspired a love for sciences, engineering and technology to most of our female Physics students. Her dedication to advancing applied research projects and seeking grant support is commendable as is her commitment for excellence in her department, the Faculty and the University.
Anthony Stea – Terrific Teaching, for instructional excellence during the past 3 years
Tony’s dedication to student learning, concern and the care he provides has been remarkable. Many of the students have praised his knowledge, helpfulness and passion for teaching biology from introductory to upper level courses and directed studies. He is a strong and respected teacher and has contributed to the success of many students including our most recent Alumni of the Year awardee.
Alida Janmaat – Remarkable Research, for excellence in scientific research endeavors
Alida’s dedication to the Sciences with her research and Citizen science projects has been outstanding. She holds research grants, actively participates in professional societies, presents at conferences, publishes articles, in addition to her many other duties as an academic. She involves the students in research and community activities. The concern and care she provides to the students has been noteworthy. Students have praised her knowledge, helpfulness and passion for biology from introductory to upper level courses and directed studies to special research projects. She is a role model for our students, balancing research, teaching, service, family and civic duties that make her a worthy recipient of this year’s Remarkable Research Award.
Jason Thomas – Outstanding Outreach, for excellence in community outreach events
Jason’s dedication to making the Annual Regional Science Fair another successful one at UFV is commendable. His organizational skills and involvement in logistical details has been instrumental. Jason’s assistance with student leaders and involving students in research and community activities, and the concern and care you provide to the students has been outstanding.
Greg Schlitt – Superb Service, for superb performance of service duties for academic, non-academic and staff
Greg’s professional attitude, mentoring ways, his service to Math, Science and the University at large, has been exceptional and appreciated by all who deal with him. Students and colleagues have praised his efforts. His commitment, dedication and supportive attitude is valued and acknowledged which makes him the perfect choice of for this year’s Superb Service Award!
Avril Alfred – Superb Service, for superb performance of service duties for academic, non-academic and staff
Avril’s bright smile, gentle nature, cheerful approach, attention to detail, and “can do” approach, is appreciated not only by those in Biology but all who have had the pleasure to work with her. Her commitment, dedication and supportive attitude is valued and acknowledged. Many of the students and colleagues have praised her efforts which makes Avril the perfect choice for this year’s award!
Congratulations to all the recipients of this year’s Dean’s awards! They certainly do deserve them because not only are they amazing in their respective areas, they really do care about the students and that is the most important thing. I commend Lucy for starting these awards and recognizing the greatness in Science!
