Today was a more ordinary day at LIYSF. We had the opprtunity to sleep in until 8:00am and got ready for specialist lectures based on what we chose before coming to London. I had a lecture on Dopamine and Deep Brain Stimulation which essentially examined the role of dopamine, and how we can use it to treat disease such as Parkinsons! Very interesting content, but the speaker was rather dry.
This afternoon was much more interesting however, we had a very engaging lecture on the Rosetta mission, which which was sent into space about 5 years ago and has finally caught up to a comet! The satellite-like device was able to align with the comet and take many types of measurements, and even launch a probe to land on the surface and examine the rocks! Absolutely phenomenal lecture which really made up for this morning’s. The only downside was that I had to sit in the overflow lecture hall today because there are too many of us to fit into the main lecture hall, so I could not actually see the speaker.
This evening we had speakers come from the British Council to encourage us to come to school in the UK. It was interesting, but I’m really not planning to study abroad at this point. The rest of the evening was spent hanging out with many others in the Beit residence common rooms! There is even an electric piano in there which we can take turns performing for each other!
Tomorrow though is going to be amazing, we are heading out to the NIHR Biomedical Research Labs at Oxford University!
