Geography Student & Faculty Member Honoured at AELA

AwardOn February 26, 2015, Dr. Lenore Newman and student Ashleigh Yakemchuk were among the 8 winners of the Fourth Annual Abbotsford Environmental Leadership Awards (AELA) hosted by the Abbotsford-Matsqui Rotary Club at the Ramada Plaza Abbotsford Hotel and Conference Centre.

Dr. Newman and Ms. Yakemchuk were singled out as environmental leaders in the “Green Leader” and the “Green Leader of Tomorrow” categories respectively for their dedication and commitment to environmental awareness and outreach activities.

Dr. Lenore Newman, Department of Geography and the Environment, is a respected scholar in the areas of food security, agriburbia, and BC’s agricultural land reserve. Her work has garnered her many awards including the prestigious Royal Society of Canada’s New Scholar designation and holds UFV’s Canada Research Chair in Food Security and the Environment.

Ashleigh Yakemchuk is a hardworking student and researcher currently doing a project at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, USA. Ashleigh volunteers for Science’s Centre for Environmental Sustainability and worked part time as Sustainability Coordinators Assistant at UFV. Pat Harrison, Biology instructor and Chair of the Science’s Centre for Sustainability, nominated Ashleigh for the award. Her selection from among 3 other highly qualified nominees speaks loudly of Ashleigh’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
