Dikes aren’t all they are cracked up to be: Increased risk and decreased ecological values on the Fraser River.

Tamsin Lyle is principal and founding engineer with Ebbwater Consulting, a Vancouver based company that is wholly focussed on flood management.  Over her 15-year career she has she has developed in-depth technical knowledge of flood mechanisms along with a broad understanding of flood policy and planning.  She works across the country to help communities mitigate their flood risk, and often speaks out on the need to manage floods in a holistic and integrated manner.

This presentation will focus on the risk and response to potential Fraser River flooding.  Specifically, it will examine the current regulatory and funding regimes that promote structural solutions (i.e. dikes).  Alternative approaches that are mindful of the broader values associated with the river, such as aquatic and terrestrial habitats, recreational values, etc. will be discussed, and the barriers to this type of approach examined.
