Amy Mykes named UFV’s new Director of Community Programming and Experience

Amy Mykes brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role as UFV’s Director of Community Programming and Experience.

Amy Mykes (she/her) has been named as the new Director of Community Programming and Experience at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). She joins UFV after several years at the University of Calgary (UCalgary), most recently with their Alumni Engagement Team.

Mykes started with UCalgary in January 2016, joining the Government and Community Engagement team to help lead institutional events for the university. She was an active member of the cross-campus 50th Anniversary Planning Team and helped co-create community programming throughout the institution’s anniversary year (2016-2017).

Mykes possesses an extensive background with 25 years of experience in sales, customer service, hospitality, institutional event planning, sponsorship and partnership development, and community programming.

She has been responsible for co-creating strategic and mutually beneficial partnerships and programs with a range of community partners and has worked closely with Indigenous and equity-deserving communities. Mykes also helped plan and lead UCalgary’s highly successful United Way Campaign from 2016 to 2020.

From early 2020 to September 2022, Mykes served as Associate Secretary and Senate Operations Manager for the Office of the Chancellor and Senate (OCS) at UCalgary and was responsible for supporting and stewarding two high-profile Chancellors in the past three years along with 62 active Senators (who serve as Community Ambassadors at UCalgary). This role helped her establish strong committee and governance expertise while enhancing existing event planning, partnership, fund development, and volunteer engagement and stewardship skills.

“I am thrilled to welcome Amy to UFV as we imagine and co-create a community engagement plan with our university and broader communities,” says Susan Mide Kiss, UFV’s Vice-President, Community Engagement. “Amy’s breadth of experience working in the post-secondary sector and with diverse community partners will help build community engagement and pride for our 50th anniversary year in 2024-25 and beyond.”

In her most recent role, Mykes was responsible for developing an alumni volunteer strategy and programming with the Alumni Engagement team in the Office of Advancement at UCalgary. She was co-chair of the Indigenous Strategy Community Engagement/Spaces and Places subcommittee, and joined the cross-campus Indigenous Strategy Implementation committee in 2021.

Mykes completed the Indigenous Relations Training Program through UCalgary in 2019 and the Indigenous Relations Canada course through the University of Alberta in 2020.

“This is a very exciting time to join UFV, especially as we work toward the 50th anniversary year,” says Mykes.

“There’s something special happening at UFV, and I’m proud to join an institution that shares my personal commitment to community, inclusivity, integrity, and excellence. The University of the Fraser Valley exists for us, together, to make a real difference in the world. I look forward to joining this vibrant community.”

Outside of the office, Mykes can be found creating in her kitchen, cycling, snowshoeing, and learning to cross country ski.

She began her new role on January 23, 2023.
