As communities locally and globally have been faced with the urgency to deliver critical services to those in need, one of the Fall 2020 CityStudio challenges had assessed the impact that HelpSeeker community services platform has made before the pandemic as well as throughout the first wave of this unfolding health crisis. Professor Afia Raja’s Geography students approached the HelpSeeker data from a variety of angles, focusing on the most vulnerable segments of the population and the access to services they seek out.

The pandemic also accentuated the importance of socially responsible public art and purposeful placemaking as a factor in urban planning. Professor Cherie Enns’s students, also in Geography, showed their commitment and resilience at tackling a challenging task of re-imagining public spaces through a wide range of creative means. They designed a series of toolkits to help inform future public art policy in Abbotsford and build a more inclusive community. These types of projects present a very valuable experience to UFV students who develop important transferable skills while being engaged in hands-on experiential projects.

To help celebrate our students’ success and further inform our community about the CityStudio program, a business class led by Professor Kim Milnes worked on a challenge to create a vibrant and innovative CityStudio Abbotsford digital presence. Hubbub #6 contains several video tours of the CityStudio Abbotsford website prototypes proposed by students.

“Our team congratulates CityStudio students who showed resilience, perseverance and creativity throughout Fall 2020. Thank you to UFV Faculty members for their dedication and tireless efforts in delivering experiential learning opportunities in these extraordinary times,” said Larissa Horne, UFV’s Experiential Education Coordinator. “We want to express our gratitude to the City primes who assisted with project throughout the semester: Tara-Lynn Kozma-Perrin, Dena Kae Beno, Alex Mitchell, and Allison Pye, and our supporting partner, HelpSeeker. Also, thanks to the City of Abbotsford, and Alison Martens for generously supporting the HUBBUB#6 website!”
