Valley (W)rites: Exploring the valley as muse
Featuring: Billeh Nickerson, Renee Sarojini Saklikar & Tawahum Justin Bige
Billeh Nickerson is the author of five books including the 2014 City of Vancouver Book Award nominated Artificial Cherry. He is also a former editor of PRISM international and Event — two of Canada’s most respected literary journals — and a previous writer-in-residence at both Queen’s University and at the Berton House in Dawson City, Yukon. He’s currently co-editing Valley: A Poetry Anthology with Surrey Poet Laureate Renee Sarojini Saklikar. He grew up in Langley, and now resides in East Vancouver.
Renée Sarojini Saklikar is Poet Laureate for the City of Surrey, British Columbia. Her first book, children of air india, (Nightwood Editions, 2013) won the 2014 Canadian Authors Association Award for poetry and her second book, with Wayde Compton, The Revolving City: 51 Poems and the Stories Behind Them (Anvil Press/SFU Public Square, 2015) was a finalist for a 2016 City of Vancouver Book Award. Nightwood Editions recently release a collection of bee poems written by Renée, in response to essays by GG award-winning Dr. Mark Winston, entitled Listening to the Bees.
Lutselk’e Dene and Plains Cree poet Tawahum Justin Bige resides on unceded Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish territory colonially known as Vancouver. Their work has appeared in Red Rising Magazine, Oratorealis and Pulp Magazine. Tawahum’s poetry stokes the sacred fire of resurgence and decolonization on occupied Turtle Island. They currently study creative writing at Kwantlent Polytechnic University.
