Dr. María Eugenia De Luna, an associate professor in the Modern Languages Institute, has received a SSHRC Explore Grant to support her 2025–26 research on language visibility and cultural revitalization in post-secondary settings.
Her project focuses on Halq’eméylem, the traditional language of the Stó:lō People, and examines how its public presence in the university’s linguistic landscape can influence cultural identity, community engagement, and reconciliation efforts.
The study will explore how the language appears across UFV’s campuses and how it is perceived by the university community. The results will be shared with the UFV community and contribute to ongoing conversations about reconciliation and Indigenous language revitalization.
