On December 6, 1989, 14 women lost their lives at École Polytechnique de Montreal because they were women studying engineering. This act of violent misogyny led Parliament to designate December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. As we continue to remember these women 35 years later, this day also brings awareness to the continuing occurrence of violence against women in our society.
