An online presentation on Friday, Feb 16, will summarize and expand on content framed in two books that shook up the therapeutic beliefs of Dr. Leanne Cianfrini, a typically-optimistic person with 20 years experience as a Cognitive-Behavioral Psychologist.
The books are The Antidote: Happiness for People who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking (by Oliver Burkeman) and The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living (by Russ Harris)
During her presentation, Cianfrini will:
• Briefly wax philosophic on humanity’s search for meaning, “happiness,” connection, goal- achievement, clear mind, etc.
• Introduce examples (based on research and real-life clinical experience) of when positive thinking actually has an opposite effect.
• Explore alternative options to toxic positivity: embracing uncertainty, finding comfort in vulnerability and common humanity, practicing non-attachment, mindful/non-judgmental meditation, other Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based techniques and principles.
• Share recommendations for vetted resources and additional exploration of mindfulness, Stoicism, and other approaches to a contented life.
