This critically acclaimed and award-winning film follows the journey of Belmaya, a Nepalese girl. Orphaned at age nine and married at age 19, Belmaya never gives up her dream of becoming a filmmaker. Faced with intersecting inequalities due to her gender and caste, Belmaya challenges her abusive husband and society’s norms to educate her own daughter and to forge a path of happiness.
The film screening includes a recorded Q & A with Belmaya. Following the film, Dr. Geetanjali Gill (Global Development Studies), and Dr. Rita Dhungel (Social Work) will moderate a discussion with the audience. You will also have the opportunity to view a We are Resilient, a photovoice exhibit by Rita Dhungel: stories of female human trafficking survivors in Nepal. Bring your own bowl to enjoy fresh popcorn, and your own mug for coffee and tea.
