Solar panels will be installed on the roof of the Library (G building) on the Abbotsford campus as part of a UFV sustainability initiative. The panels will help lower the university’s carbon footprint and will cut electricity consumption in the building by approximately 17% under peak conditions.
Construction timing:
- Tues, Feb 16-Mon, March 1: Construction begins with electrical work in the main electrical room in G Building
- Mon, March 1-Mon, March 8: Delivery and installation of solar panels on the roof of G Building
- Mon, Mar 15-Fri, April 2: Complete electrical work, testing of system, and complete final BC Hydro approval.
Pay-off:
During the long summer days, the power generated by the solar panels could supply as much as a third of the building’s electrical demand. If power use is low, for example on a weekend, the panels could even be generating more power than the building requires, thereby feeding power back into the grid.
Impact:
There is little construction impact to staff and students. Noise will be minimal and intermittent throughout the project.
