This month’s speakers

Leah Douglas – The joys and pitfalls of trauma-informed practice and research

Professor Douglas’s specialty area, and the focus of her sabbatical, is trauma-informed practice, research, and teaching. Douglas has developed, with a colleague, a new model for trauma-informed research interviewing with vulnerable women.

Alicia Horton – Gender and power dynamics in qualitative interviews with formerly imprisoned men

In her talk, Professor Horton will address how reflexive practice require consideration of the ways in which researchers and interviewees ‘do’ gender in the context of a qualitative interview and how this might shape the quality of qualitative data and analyses. Drawing on in-depth interview data from a project involving 23 formerly incarcerated men, Horton will demonstrate the ways in which expectations of masculinity are embodied and performed by male interviewees in the context of a qualitative interview with a woman researcher.

Meetings of the Scholarly Sharing Initiative are a place where faculty, students, and interested others can gather over some delicious lunch to share, discuss, present, and receive feedback on their scholarly work. The initiative is supported by the UFV Office of Research Services and the College of Arts.
