Cascades weekend recap: Hoopsters make more history

The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams combined for a clean sweep of the UBC Okanagan Heat on the weekend, and carved out a bit of history along the way.
• Sarah Wierks of the Cascades women’s basketball team authored a pair of dominant performances in wins on Friday (70-67) and Saturday (77-65) over the Heat as UFV improved to 8-6 on the season. The 6’2” fifth-year centre from Chilliwack racked up 22 points and 18 rebounds in the opener, and posted 22 points, 19 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals in the rematch.
In the process, Wierks moved into second place on the Canada West all-time rebounding list, leapfrogging Janis Paskevich, who collected 912 boards during her career with the Calgary Dinos (1977-1982). Wierks is now at 945 total rebounds, second only to former Saskatchewan Huskie Sarah Crooks (1,181).
The weekend also featured a notable performance from third-year power forward Katie Brink, who exploded for a career-high 27 points on Saturday.
• The UFV men’s hoopsters extended their Canada West regular season win streak to 28 games, beating UBC-O 73-66 on Friday and 79-65 on Saturday.
Fifth-year centre Jasper Moedt came up with huge double-doubles both nights, notching 16 points and 17 rebounds in the first game and 17 points and 15 boards in the rematch. Kevon Parchment also had a big weekend, tying Moedt for team-high honours with 16 points on Friday and pouring in a game-high 19 points on Saturday.
The Cascades (14-0) are ranked No. 7 in the CIS.
• In a clash of nationally ranked women’s volleyball teams, UFV battled the Vancouver Island University Mariners to a split.
On Friday, the CCAA No. 9-ranked Cascades won the first two sets, only to watch the No. 13 Mariners come roaring back to win the next two and force a fifth and deciding set. UFV pulled through with a 15-12 win, though, as Rachel Funk finish things off with two clutch kills.
VIU bounced back to win in four sets on Saturday, despite solid performances from Cascades middle Emily Carroll (a team-high 11 total points) and libero Amy Davidson (15 digs). UFV is 10-8 on the season, good for third in the PacWest conference.
• The UFV men’s volleyball team played the No. 7-ranked team in the nation awfully tough, but ended up on the wrong end of a weekend sweep.
The Cascades to

ok the first two sets in the opener, but the Mariners clawed all the way back to win in five. It was a similar story on Saturday, as UFV won the first set but VIU rallied to claim the victory in four.
The Cascades sit fifth in the PacWest at 6-12.
• Looking ahead, this coming week’s schedule is highlighted by the first-ever home tournament hosted by the UFV wrestling program.
The Cascades Classic is set for Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Envision Athletic Centre, beginning at 9 am and running until roughly 2 pm. The host squad has high hopes, and rightly so — the UFV men’s wrestling team is currently ranked No. 1 in the CIS.
The basketball teams travel to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars in a Saturday-Sunday set, while the volleyball teams are on a bye week.
