English as a Second Language associate professor Gilmour Jope has completed a PhD program in Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia with a dissertation that links Aristotle’s ethical philosophy to literary criticism and the study of teaching. Gilmour defended his dissertation “Grasping Phronesis: The Fabric of Discernment in Becoming an Ethical Teacher” in April 2014 with only minor revisions required by his examining committee, and he completed his program in less than a week following his defence.
“It’s been a wonderful experience and I’m very grateful to everyone here at UFV for their support with this project,” he said. Gilmour holds a BEd in Adult Education and an MA in Language and Literacy Education, and he has been teaching courses in UFV’s ESL department since 2001. Gilmour has also been involved in curriculum development and taught courses in UFV’s TESL certificate program since 2003, and he served on UFV’s Teaching and Learning Advisory Council from 2008-2013.
As a doctoral student, Gilmour received a four-year tuition fee waiver award from UBC for outstanding academic achievement and a major UBC Graduate Fellowship Award, and his program included work as a graduate research assistant at UBC’s Centre for the Study of Teacher Education and the presentation of a paper at the annual conference of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education. He is presently on sabbatical leave and planning to spend some time with his family before returning to work in September 2014. Congratulations, Gilmour!
