Talking FUN-damentals of sex at UFV Science Café

Explore the FUN-damentals of sex at the next Science Café, taking place Friday, April 17 at the University of the Fraser Valley’s Chilliwack campus library (45190 Caen Ave., Building A).

Science Cafés offer casual, dynamic interactions between audiences and scientists. This one features Dr. Carin Bondar, and doctoral candidate Sarah Rempel discussing the science of reproduction.

Carin is an author whose books include The Nature of Human Nature, The Nature of Sex, Wild Sex, and Wild Moms. She’s appeared on several TV shows, and recently made her theatrical stage debut at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre with her one-woman show, Adventures in Wild Sex.

Carin has delivered TED Talks, and as a researcher, has gone on expeditions to countries in South America, the West Indies, southeast Asia, the middle east, India, and Germany.

Carin is also a sessional/adjunct faculty member at UFV, with a reputation for making biology fun.

“I like to challenge people by saying that every decision we make in our lives is somehow related to sex,” she says. “The nuanced layers that we humans pile on to the concepts of survive and reproduce make it easy to fool ourselves into thinking we are somehow different or better than all those other animals out there.”

Sarah Rempel is a UFV alumna (BA kinesiology 2011), and a behavioural consultant with a passion for translating complex topics into practical, relatable insights. She also holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Saint Joseph’s University and is currently working towards a doctorate in clinical psychology through California Southern University.

Sarah is dedicated to helping others better understand human behaviour and will speak about the science of desire — why we want what we want.

The Science Café, which is free to attend and open to everyone, takes place from 1 to 2:30 pm.

Light refreshments will be available, along with door prizes. Guests are invited to bring their own reusable coffee mug. Please arrive early enough to find and pay for parking. If UFV parking is full, additional parking is available near the Vedder dog park.
