Welcome to our new SASI Coordinator, Alysha Mahil!

All of us at the South Asian Studies Institute welcome Ms. Alysha Mahil as the new Coordinator since March 1st, 2023. She is an Abbotsford born and raised heritage professional having graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2021 with a Major in Anthropology and a Minor in Archeological Anthropology. Most recently, Alysha worked at The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford as the Exhibition Development Assistant since January 2020. She worked as part of the curatorial team developing the Des Pardes: South Asian in the Valley exhibition scheduled to open in the Fall of 2023.

In the days ahead, Alysha will be working on a new exhibition, Transnational Marriages: A BC Story, for the Sikh Heritage Museum which will launch this July. Also, she is currently researching the role of local community members’ legal support and involvement in the struggle of the Komagata Maru passengers in 1914 to successfully migrate to Canada. Alysha has been working hard to maintain the SASI databases of research outcomes and results and effectively conducting planning for the 2023 Bajwa Dhami Building Bridges Community Golf Day in addition to the many research events at SASI.
