On July 19th 2024, CrowdStrike, a cyber security company, issued a content update which crashed Microsoft Windows systems worldwide, including those at UFV. IT Services has been working quickly to resolve the issue on UFV devices.
Following this event, threat actors have been attempting to capitalize on the crisis in many ways, including:
• Sending phishing emails posing as CrowdStrike support
• Impersonating CrowdStrike staff in phone calls
• Sending corrupt files or scripts to automate recovery
UFV’s Cybersecurity team wants to remind everyone of the following:
• Be cautious when responding to emails or phone calls or clicking any links. CrowdStrike will not reach out to you directly.
• If you experience the blue screen issue, contact the IT Service Desk . Do not download files or scripts that claim to fix the problem.
• If you receive any suspicious emails claiming to be from CrowdStrike, forward them to phishreport@ufv.ca.
If you experience an issue related to the CrowdStrike update, or if you have any questions about the event, email the IT Service Desk or visit the IT Services webpage.
