Exploring Equity Speaker Series returns with hockey talk April 25

Dr. Brett Pardy is the presenter at the next installment of the Exploring Equity Speaker Series on April 25.

As the NHL playoffs get going, UFV’s Dr. Brett Pardy speaks about hockey and Canadianess at the Exploring Equity Speaker Series, taking place Thursday, April 25, from 6:30 to 9 pm on UFV’s Abbotsford campus.

For decades, hockey has been presented as intrinsic to Canadian identity. But what does the current state of a game — dealing with multiple crises and opportunities — say about the state of the nation? Pardy asks how hockey culture for participants and fans can change to better represent all Canadians.

Pardy is instructor of Media and Communications Studies at UFV. His research focuses on the emotional impact of media on learning and unlearning conceptions around racism, masculinity, community, and mental health. Pardy is the senior editor of the Hockey in Society website.

Pardy’s presentation will be held in Building B, room B101. Refreshments will be served, and entry is by donation to support the UFV-Student Union Society Food Bank. Register online at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/ufvscommunityhealthandsocialinnovationhub/1222117

Please Note: Unfortunately, due to the cafeteria’s construction, access to B101 is less straightforward for those wishing to use an elevator. However, there will be staff to guide attendees as you enter the building. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to chasi@ufv.ca and we will be happy to help.

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford Sumas and UFV’s Community Health and Social Innovation Hub (CHASI) host conversations around advancing equity in our community, and this is the fourth installment in the Exploring Equity Speaker Series. Previously, Dr. Keith Carlson discussed strategies for building genuine reconciliation, Dr. Darryl Plecas talked about youth crime in Abbotsford, and Dr. Carin Bondar offered tips and techniques to identify misinformation online.
