Tamsin Lyle, an engineer who focuses on flood management and is contracted to the City of Vancouver, will be giving a talk titled “Dikes aren’t all they are cracked to be: Increased risk and decreased ecological values on the Fraser River”. Specifically, she examines the current regulatory and funding regimes that promoted structural solutions (e.g. dikes). Alternative approaches that are mindful of the broader values associated with the river, such as aquatic and terrestrial habitats, recreational values, etc. will be discussed, and the barriers to this type of approach examined.
