There is a colonial tendency by many Canadians to turn to the USA or England for models to heed in the ecological issues we face on global, national and local levels. There is, of course, Farley Mowat and David Suzuki who have embodied some of the finest aspects of the unique Canadian ecological vision. But, before Suzuki and Mowat, before Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring”, was the pioneering life and prolific writings of Roderick Haig-Brown. This presentation will focus on the significance of Haig-Brown as Canada’s green prophet.
Ron Dart has taught in the department of political science/philosophy/religious studies at University of the Fraser Valley since 1990. He was on staff with Amnesty International in the 1980s before joining UFV. Ron teaches a course on “Religion, Nature, and Science” at UFV, and his decades long interest in mountaineering (beginning in Switzerland in the early 1970s) has meant he has an interest in ecological issues.
