The UFV Library and Teaching & Learning teams are launching the Open Education In-Action Initiative (OEIAI), funded by a BCcampus Institutional Open Education grant and funds from the Office of the Provost and VP, Academic. OEIAI has 4 interconnected projects: Open Education Strategy, planning Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) implementation plan, Open Education Micro Grant program, and the creation of an Open Education website.
Dr. Shaun Sun, appointed Open Education Strategist until April 2026, will lead consultations across faculties and student groups. Having taught with free open-licensed textbooks since 2018, he has already helped hundreds of students avoid textbook costs. UFV’s goal is to move from scattered OER adoption to a coordinated strategy that makes learning more accessible.
Beginning Fall 2025, courses without required textbooks will be flagged as ZTC. The OEIAI will also fund short projects and student assistants to expand open resource use.
